The Hermit
Upright
solitude · the inner light · search · wisdom earned
The Hermit stands on a peak with a lantern and a staff, looking down at the road he has climbed. He is the card of deliberate solitude: stepping away to think, to search, to find the light that cannot be found in company. Upright, it advises withdrawal with purpose - reflection, study, a retreat that returns with something. The answer is inside, but you have to go in to get it.
He climbed to be alone and found the lamp was for others.
What would you understand if you were quiet for one whole day?
Reversed
isolation · withdrawal · refusing the light
Reversed, the Hermit has stayed too long on the mountain. Solitude turns into isolation, reflection into rumination, and the lamp is held so close that it lights nothing. It can also be the opposite: refusing the quiet you need, filling every hour with noise. The card asks whether you are alone to find something or to avoid it.
He closed the door so well that the answer could not get in.
Which solitude is rest, and which is hiding?
