The Hanged Man
Upright
surrender · pause · a new angle · letting go
The Hanged Man hangs by one foot from a living tree, hands behind his back, face calm, a light around his head. He is not being punished. He has chosen to stop, to see the world from the other side, to give something up in order to understand. Upright, the card means suspension: a pause, a surrender, a sacrifice that turns out to be a gift. Do not act. Look.
Upside down, the problem looked like a door.
What would change if you stopped trying to fix it for a day?
Reversed
stalling · pointless sacrifice · the refusal to let go
Reversed, the Hanged Man is stuck rather than suspended. The pause has become stalling, the sacrifice has no meaning, or you are refusing to release something that is already gone. It can mean resistance to a lesson that keeps presenting itself. The card asks whether you are waiting with purpose or simply waiting.
He hung there for years and called it a plan.
What are you waiting for that is not coming?
