Major arcana · VIII
Strength
Upright
courage · patience · soft power · the tamed beast
Strength shows a woman closing the mouth of a lion with bare hands, without fear and without hurry. The card is not about muscle. It is the courage that stays soft, the patience that outlasts the fury, the quiet authority that comes from being at peace with your own animal. Upright, it speaks of endurance, compassion with a spine, and the kind of influence that does not raise its voice.
The lion did not surrender. It decided she was not the enemy.
What in you needs calming, not conquering?
Reversed
self-doubt · force without feeling · the lion wins
Reversed, Strength has lost its calm. Either the lion wins - fear, anger, appetite - or force replaces feeling and strength becomes domination. It can also be self-doubt so deep that you cannot see your own power. The card asks what you are fighting, and whether it would stop fighting if you stopped.
She roared, and the lion took notes.
Where are you using force because you have stopped trusting gentleness?
