Death
Upright
endings · transformation · the clearing · what must go
Death rides a pale horse across a field where a king lies fallen and a child offers flowers, and in the distance the sun is rising between two towers. The card almost never means a death. It means an ending that clears the ground: a chapter closed, an identity outgrown, a transformation that cannot be undone and should not be. Upright, it speaks of release, and of the strange relief that follows.
The field was burned in autumn. By spring nobody remembered the fire.
What has already ended that you are still carrying?
Reversed
resistance to change · stagnation · the half-ending
Reversed, Death is the ending that will not finish. Clinging to what is over, a change resisted until it becomes decay, a life kept in the shape of a past that no longer fits. It can also mean a transition that is stuck halfway. The card asks what you are holding that has already let go of you.
She kept the dead plant on the sill because it had been a gift.
What are you keeping alive by refusing to bury it?
